Ugo Vallauri, David Newman and Jonathan Campaigne discuss small farm productivity issues which are key to economic growth and poverty reduction. They discuss how farmers are not effectively linked to the larger industry and therefore how mobiles phones can be used to help with this area. A Project of Media Lab Asia Executed by IIIT, Hyderabad and Media Lab Asia in association with Nokia http://www.esagu.in eSagu is a tool for IT-based personalized Agro-Advisory system. (Sagu means cultivation in Telugu language.). It aims to improve farm productivity by delivering high quality personalized (farm-specific) agro-expert advice in a timely manner to each farm at the farmers door-steps without farmer asking a question.. The advice is provided on regular basis (typically once a week) from sowing to harvesting which reduces the cost of cultivation and increases the farm productivity as well as quality of agri-commodities. In eSagu, the developments in IT such as (database, Internet, and digital photography) are extended to improve the performance of agricultural extension services. eSagu offers next generation agricultural extension tool and supplements and integrates into the existing agricultural extension system. The eSagu experiment has started in 2004. In this system, high resolution mobile cameras such as Nokia's N95 to capture crop disease so as to enable remote scientist to diagnose diseases in the crop and provide necessary and timely advice. Supported by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), the ground-breaking initiative, whose theme is “Social and Economic Development using Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs)”, aimed at enhancing participants’ knowledge on how India has harnessed ICT to promote its overall growth. IICD (iicd.org) and CTA (cta.int) supports the Community Information Centres in Bimbilla, Bolgatanga, Navrongo Salaga, Yendi and Zebilla in Ghana

Ghanas Ministry of Communications is constructing 230 Community Information Centres (CICs). These centres serve as electronic libraries where people from remotely located areas can look up information about topics such as farming, education and healthcare. Depending on the needs of District Assemblies, the support from CTA and IICD will target ten Community Information Centres in the Northern part of Ghana. IICD and CTA will also provide strategic advice to the Ministry and Assemblies in terms of the technical, organizational and financial sustainability of the CICs and technical and business development training for CIC staff members.
